Around 3.500 Cambodian workers are working to remedy Angkor Wat's ills. Nevetheless, workers' rights continue to be ignored by the specialised foreign companies which have been de facto employers of the workers, including the Ecole française d'Extrême Orient, the Japanese Team for Safeguarding Angkor (JSA) and Sophia University.

These rights are fundamental recognized trade union rights, ratified by Cambodia in 1999. The country has taken the obligation to ensure and promote freedom of association and the right to organise and bargain collectively.
